With the main road at Paddy being closed, the Drumgley road was being used as a rat run to get around it so we avoided this and instead chose a route up the Dundee road then around by Inverarity. Turning towards Gateside into a strong headwind, the going was hard and didn't get any easier as we climbed up the side of Kincaldrum Hill and along to Foffarty then around the back of Hunter's hill before dropping down to Glamis. Ron and Tom had beaten us to it so that made 8 on the night.

Sunday Run to Blairgowrie
Sunday started off cold and misty but there were early signs that it would lift as the group of eight Charlie, Keith, Gus, Tom, Jim, Norman, Ron, and myself (Dave) headed out the Bogside road. There was a faint head wind from the South West but nothing to worry about as we continued on turning up to Airlie School by Baikie Sawmill. From there it was straight along the main road and into Alyth where the fine day had encouraged a few horse riders out and we passed a horse and cart coming out of the town. Climbing up out of Alyth, we were now in the sunshine but looking down into the den there was still ice at the bottom. There was a steep climb out by Bamff before turning along towards Bridge of Cally. Re-grouping in the sun we then continued down the dip at Mains of Creuchies then up onto the moorland below the Drumderg wind farm.

Re-grouping up past Bamff

relaxing in the sun

The views over towards the snow clad hills in the West were clear and the cycling pleasant as we eased down by Heatherhaugh to the T junction. Turning left we took the roller coaster route up past Drimmie Woods where looking down we saw a herd of deer sunning themselves in the field, they gave us the once over but were enjoying the sun too much to let us disturb them. A fast series of descents down by Courthill and Bonnington brought us down into Rattray where we followed the main road out of town before turning down by Aberbothrie and over the main road to Ardler.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; Keeping to the main roads, the five of us who turned up, Ron, Tom, Gus, Charlie, Dave, made our away along to Meigle instead. The main road was clear apart from ice at the side and it was quite pleasant going in the sunshine. We passed a group of Dundee Wheelers coming the other way so they must have had the same idea. At Meigle we took the back road to Ardler to see if the Tavern was open for a coffee.

That road was rather icy, so we took our time, but never the less arrived there an hour too early. Taking a right turn, we made our way to the main road and back along to Meigle for a cuppie at the Joiner's Cafe. We met Big Eric from Dundee there and chatted a while before heading home in the sunshine along the Bogside Road.

The next Wednesday Night Run is to Finavon

The Run on Sunday 12th Feb is to Blairgowrie

Saturday Run to Bothy

On the 1st Saturday of each month there is a run to the Bothy. With wet snow and slippy roads I held off a bit but eventually headed there along the Bogside at first then up by Ruthven where it was very slippery in places.
Kept on along by Shanzie where cycling was ok in the fresh snow but treacherous in the car tracks. Finally got to the bottom of the Hill of Alyth where the road was a bit better but with some rutted ice to contend with. Nobody at the bothy; no big surprise. Was getting the fire on and the bacon on the go when Ian turned up.
Got the place nice and cozy, couple of bacon rolls and tea then headed home back down the icy hill to the 5 ways roundabout at Alyth where the roads were clear all the way to Meigle and along main road to Forfar.

Looking out from the Bothy

Cold and icy looking Isla

Wednesday Evening Pub Run

It was a fine evening, quite cold but hardly a breath of wind as three of us(Charlie, Dave, and Gus) and headed out to Memus by BattleDykes, Justinhaugh, and Baldoukie. There was a sharp descent into the Den of Morphie followed by a steeper climb out, and once at the top we regrouped and sheltered for a few minutes at Morphie Farm. Another descent with fine views of the river took us down to the Mill then back up again to the Stone of Morphie. With the weather looking wild over the sea we dropped down again to the viaduct to have a look at the recently completed cycle path. A short dirt track took us on to the old railway viaduct then along a grit path above the main road and along by the old aerodrome. As it was wet and miserable we chose not to follow the path down by the shore and instead joined the main road into Montrose and along to Tesco for some food and hot drinks. With little improvement in weather we opted for the direct route home and enjoyed a tail wind all the way.

The next Wednesday Night Run (1st February) is to the Drovers Inn at Memus .
The Sunday run on 5th February will be down to riverside in Dundee. Although milder the roads still had icy patches so we had to take care as we headed out by Horny cross and Memus. Here big Jim's bike suffered a mechanical, sounded like the bearing on his pedal was about to go, so he turned homeward. The remaining 8 of us continued on past Memus and had to work against the wind for a mile or two before reaching the shelter of the woods at Cortachy Castle.

Around by Memus

Climbing out of Cortachy village we came upon ice and were lucky to stay on. From there it was along the Alyth road with fine views over Strathmore. There was little breeze so the cycling in the sun was pleasant as we continued along to Ruthven crossroads and down to the Bogside road. Turning right just after Blackhill farm we then crossed over the main road at Eassie crossroads then up the hill to the Newtyle road. From there it was just a couple of miles along to Glamis. The meal was enjoyed by all, and near the end the President Ron Harrow gave a short speech thanking all for attending.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; We decided to head for Arbroath and we soon warmed up on the climb up the Lour Road. The back roads were looking a bit icy and the climb up Lour Hill was quite bad. Once at the top it was along by Crachie Mill then up and around the back of Idvies and down to Pitmuies where we took the main road to Friockheim, Ron turned off here and the rest of us made our way through the village to join the back road from Boysack to St Vigeans. Just before the climb out, a car clipped Gus's bike and knocked him off and didn't bother stopping. Being in front of him we didn't notice so couldn't identify the car. Thankfully no injuries so we continued up by Meadowbank which was closed so we headed down to Morrison's Supermarket for a coffee. Near the Abbey on a slippery footpath, Dave came off and hit the deck but was unhurt. After a warm cuppie we set off for home via Arbirlot and Carmyllie. The wind was getting stronger and was now against us making the going a bit hard especially on the exposed parts up the hill to Curleys then along to Kirkbuddo and Whigstreet. Missing out Lour Hill we kept on going down to Inverarity Kirk then back to Forfar using the cycle path alongside the dual carriageway.

The Wednesday evening pub run this week will be to the Drovers Inn.
Next Saturday 7th January there will be a run to the Bothy arriving about 11am.
The next Sunday Run on the 8th January will be to Stracathro.

Bothy Nicht

The annual New Year get together at the bothy, a wee bit early this year, took took place on Thursday and Friday. 12 of us enjoyed the festivities that started around mid-day. Big Jim the new janny had arrived first (allegedly at 6:30am :-) ) and had erected the awning and got the fire going, much appreciated as it turned bitterly cold as we arrived. Once the tents were up we started to sample the real ale purchased from the brewery at Carnoustie. Keith did the catering and we were soon enjoying hot soup followed by onion bajis and some more beer. The weather was getting a bit wild at times and every now and again the reek blew back down the lum and smoked us out. The main course of curry and rice was eagerly consumed and more beer was required to wash it down. Now getting dark, the new bothy lights powered by the genny were officially switched on and toasted with more beer. By about 10pm the beer barrels were as good as empty and we went on to coffee before sampling the plum whiskey and a couple of single malts. The sky cleared displaying a fine starry night but the squalls persisted. By around 1am everyone had gone to their tents except Tom who toughed it out in a bivvy bag under the awning.

Tom in the Bivvy Bag

Friday morning was calm and frosty with ice on the tents and we all gradually surfaced and had some breakfast before heading home. Ron stayed behind to wait for others who intended to come up on the Friday. It had been another fine night with thanks to Jim for getting the bothy ready, Ron for organising the beer, and Keith for preparing another splendid meal.

Those at the meal were Pat, Ron, Norman, Brian, Alan, Keith, Gus , Lee, Jim, Ian, Tom, Dave. later on Pat went home and Jim went back down to his caravan with the remaining 10 sleeping over.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Keith, Gus, and Dave battled against the breeze taking the direct route out by Ballindarg. Slow going, had to stand up on the pedals along the flat bit by the sawmill. As usual Jim provided us with chips and we were also entertained by a piper who was performing at a party night. Charlie and Ian turned up separately and Pat and Ron had walked down from Kirrie. The return journey took around 5 mins.

Boxing Day Run

At the Bothy

New Beer Cabinet

Monday was very mild and blustery with gale force winds from the south west. Never the less 5 cyclists turned up at the leisure centre eager to work off some of the festive excesses. Gus, Charlie, Ian, Dave, and Fraser sent off out the Bogside Road battling against the wind most of the way.Turning north up by Den of Airlie we got some respite but were soon working hard again along by Shanzie. We got a good blow up the steep climb by Barry Hill then again by Incheoch to the Craig Isla Bridge. Ron was already at the bothy and had the fire on and cuppie made. We had a bite to eat then moved the beer barrels to create a bit more space ready for the New Year gathering. The return journey by Lintrathen and Kingoldrum was nice and fast helped by the strengthening wind.

Wednesday evening Pub Run

Four of us Charlie, Gus, Norman, and Dave headed out to Glamis via Paddy School and Roundyhill. It was a glorious sunny day with little breeze and temperatures around zero as the group continued down to the Plashmill then around by Trumperton Forge and down the Milldens road then along the back roads to Guthrie. Passing Windyedge in the sunshine it just about felt warm but care had to be taken with icy patches lurking at corners and down in the hollows. After a brief pedal up the main Brechin Road, we then turned along by Glasswell, Kinnell Aerodrome, then up the side of Wuddy Law to Bolshan where we enjoyed a fine descent to the Montrose Road. Keeping to the minor roads we continued along the Muirmills road by Whanland and Egypt. From there it was back down to the crossroads at Montreathmont then in the Montrose road to Clocksbriggs where we cut across to Lunanhead. Arriving at Mary and Tom's we were treated to copious amounts of Christmas fare and a fine sociable afternoon.

The next Wednesday night pub run 21/12/2011 is to Glamis
With Sunday being Christmas, there will be a run to the Bothy on Boxing Day (Monday) leaving from the Leisure Centre at 10 am

Sunday Run

Sunday was a calm December day, bright and cold with dampness in the air.
10 members set off to Meikleour. Charlie, Dave, Keith, Gus, Ron, Tom, Norman, Big Jim, Ian, and Angela . Meiklour has become a bit of an annual pilgrimage for the Angus CC members due to their choice of Real Ales. The outward route took us aout along the Bogside Road as far as Meigle where Ian and Angela turned off. We then turned up towards Alyth then along the Leitfie Road passed Strathmore Golf course and down to the metal bridge at Aberbrothrie. From there it was a bit of a climb up past the old iron Chapel to the to the main Blairgowrie road.

Big Jim has no affection for steep climbs, but he managed a cheery smile never-the-less.

Re-grouping at the main road to Blair

Once through Blair we went down the Essendy road through the standing stones and over the bridge.

At the turn-off to Meiklour the sign said "Road Closed" we followed it anyway assuming that we could dismount and push past the roadworks or obstacle. We were however prevented from progressing very far by a fallen tree, damaged power lines, and an angry worker who couldn't have kept his hair on if he'd tried. So about turn it was, following the Lethendy road down to the crossroads then back along to Meikleour. Lunch at the Coach Inn was enjoyed by all and enhanced by sampling a couple of the ales on tap. The "Jock Frost" and the "Lure of Meikleour" both got the thumbs up. Heading home by Coupar Angus we turned along the back roads by Ardler and Meigle to enjoy a bit of a tail wind. At Belmont we took a wee detour through the estate before heading to Forfar, (Kirrie in Ron's case) via Kirkinch and Balkeerie .

The Pub run on Wednesday 14th December is to Finavon.

Next Sunday Run 18th December is the Mince Pie Run hosted by the Wards. We left the town by Market Street and Whitehills where we joined the Old Brechin Road. Being a bus route this was well gritted and we were soon warming up as we started the long climb up from Lunanhead to Aberlemno and up Angus Hill. From the top the view over Stathmore and up towards the Mearns were spectacular. On through Brechin and Taranty we then turned up the back roads by hill of Stracathro and Muir of Pert before dropping down to cross the dual carriageway at Northwater Bridge.

Heading down to Nortwater Bridge from Muir of Pert

Once across it was only 5 miles up by Bogmuir and Meiklehall to Fettercairn for Lunch. The food was good at the Arch restaurant but their new electronic ordering system was a bit woeful and crashed a few times.

Coming out of the Arches at Fettercairn after lunch.

After lunch it was into the icy wind all the way to Edzell. Luckily the sun was still high enough to add a bit of warmth as we headed down past Inchbare and through by Murlingden to Little Brechin. The back roads had a few slippy bits but not too bad as we headed home in the fading light by Carreston, Sheilhill Bridge, and Hornie Cross.

Next Wednesday Night Pub Run (7th December) is to the Drovers at Memus.
Next Sunday Run (11th December) is to Meikleour

Saturday at the Bothy

On the 1st Saturday of each month there is a drum up at the bothy at around 11am.

The cycle up from Forfar was hard work at times into a strong gale.

Keith had driven up with the new generator which he tested and used to charge up the battery. It was bright and sunny though as we set off up the Dundee loan through the roadworks that have blighted the toon for the last few weeks. We headed out of Forfar up by Lochlands and took the path down the dual carriageway then around by Inverarity where we started the long climb up by Carrot Farm then over the hill.

With the strong westerly breeze we got a blow up then had a good run down to Kellas with fine views over the Tay. Turning off towards Duntrune we started working a we bit harder into the breeze. There was shelter in the trees down to the ponds at Duntrune which looked like they had been drained. Now exposed to the elements it was into the blast up to Powrie where we past a barn full of happy Turkeys waiting for Christmas. Continuing up the Emmock road into the gale was purgatory and we were glad of some respite when we eventually turned north towards the Sidlaws. At Balkemback it was back into the wind for 5 miles along to Auchterhouse and up the Bonnyton road. Now sheltered from the blast and mainly down hill, the next stage to Davidston and down the Glack of Newtyle was more enjoyable. A few miles later and we arrived at Ardler for lunch..

The Tav was busy with a function but we managed to squeeze into a table at the end of the room. After an enjoyable lunch we left Ardler in the sunshine, and with the breeze now at our tail, we headed home by Meigle, Kirkinch, and Glamis.

The next Wednesday night Pub run 30/11/2011 is to Roundyhill.
Saturday 3rd December- Bothy for 11am.
The next Sunday run 4th December is to Fettercairn.

Sunday Run

20/11/2011

On a damp misty day, 5 started out from the leisure centre and 4 members Gus,Ron, Jimmy and Charlie got as far as Fettercairn. Lunch in Arch Cafe (under new owners) then out of Fetter by distillery up the hill, past all the xmas trees, followed road round to foot of Glen Esk, before returning through Edzell, Dunlappie, then left and right turns took us through Little Brechin, Careston, Sheihill and Horniecross. There was a bit of sun on way back. From there we followed the first stages of the "Scone the Flat Way" Audax i.e. out by Glamis and Newtyle then up the hill past Kinpurney House and Halliburton Woods. Still very overcast there wasn't much of a view as we dropped down past Pitcur and on to Collace crossroads. Here the group split up with Ron,Norman, and Graeme choosing a route round by Ardler. The remaining 4 continued, turning left through the village then up and around the side of Dunsinane Hill. Just after the quarry we climbed gently into the glen up by Black Hill for a couple of miles before enjoying the fine descent through Abernyte and down to the Horseshoe Restaurant at Inchture for a bite to eat.
After the break it was over the dual carriageway before turning into the Carse towards Invergowrie. Now into a easterly breeze, we took turns at the front and maintained a good speed along the flats by Hallyards and Kingoodie. Once past Invergowrie we took the cycle path along Riverside and through the docks climbing out of the town by Strathearn Road and Claypotts. Helped by a tail wind we then continued up slope to Kellas and Bucklerheads to start the final climb of the day over Carrot Hill. Climbing steeply out of Forfar up the Lour Road we were soon enjoying the sunshine as we made their way round by Craichie and Bowriefaulds and down to Idvies. Climbing steeply at first the gradient eased slightly for a few miles up by Dumbarrow then over the summit of Cairconon Hill which afforded fine views of Arbroath and the coastline below. After fine descent to Woodville we dropped down to St Vigeans then up to Meadowbank for a morning cuppy and a bacon roll. In the warmth of the sun we continued along the coastal cycle route by Redcastle and Lunan bay pausing to regroup at Braehead.

From there we meandered around by Usan and Boddin before dropping down into Ferryden. At Montrose the group split up with 3 taking the direct route back to Forfar. The remainder headed around by Hillside where we began to climb steadily up to Bank of Gallery then Muir of Pert.

At Hill of Stracathro, the toss of a coin decided the route home which was down the hill and over the A90 returning to Forfar in the fading light and the dipping temperatures by Murling Den, Little Brechin and Carreston.

Next Wednesday Evening Run 9th November to the Drovers Inn at Memus 7pm from clubrooms.
Next Sunday run 13th November to Inchture. 10am from Leisure Centre.

<georss:box>56.6286412 -2.916384699999961 56.659725200000004 -2.8607896999999607</georss:box>
